Military Academy

The Military Academy’s mission is to educate and prepare future Officers to the cadre of the Army and Republican National Guard (GNR), providing them with the necessary skills to develop their functions, granting the adequate competences that will allow the accomplishment of the Army and GNR’s missions. 


The Military Academy is a public higher education military university of reference (both at national and international levels). Its status is supported by virtue of its teaching, research, and work of excellence and specificity provided to the community, in particular within the domains of security and defence, based on the importance of its values, and strengthened by the Academy’s importance for the Army, the Republican National Guard and for Society. 


The Military Academy develops, within the areas of scientific, military and behavioral education, a broad set of activities with the purpose of supporting the cadets in identifying and accepting the culture and values established by the Army and GNR. Hence, the cadets practice, promote, develop and consolidate certain timeless and indispensable principles, such as: patriotism, honor, duty, courage, loyalty and security.


The Military Academy provides integrated Master degrees in Military Sciences, Military Administration, Military Engineering, Military Electronic Engineering-Signals, Maintenance, Military Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, Dental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences. It has 473 students (87% male and 11% female), and a total of 130 teachers: 60 PhDs, 72 military teachers and 58 civilian teachers. The support personnel is composed by 340 people.

Colonel Paulo Machado

Paulo Machado is a Colonel of the Portuguese Army. He works in Military Academy as Head of International Relations, Military Teacher and ERASMUS Coordinator. He holds a master’s degree in Sports Management and is a PhD Student in Gender Studies. 


Paulo is the Project Coordinator for the Transnational Erasmus Project Military Gender Studies (MGS) and was Academic Expert on Transnational Erasmus Project International Military Leadership Academy (IMLA). 


He has experience in the field of Gender Studies and held Integration of a Gender Perspective in Common Security and Defence College Course, organized by The Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) and the RACVIAC Gender Training of the Trainers Course (GToT), organized by RACVIAC – Centre for Security Cooperation.


He is the Chairperson of the LOD7 (Line of Development) – Financing the Initiative in the Implementation Group (IG) of the European and Security Defence Policy (ESDC).


In his free time, Paulo practices fencing, running, and boxing.

Professor Sofia Menezes

She was Academic Expert on the Transnational Project International Military Leadership Academy and Project Coordinator in another Strategic Partnership Projects: HELPSec - Hybridisation of specialized English learning for security professionals, under the umbrella of the Erasmus+ Programme. 


Sofia is the Scientific Coordinator for the Portuguese Team in the MGS - Military Gender Studies project. She has always been interested in the field of Gender Studies and Gender mainstreaming and has been engaged in several courses in the area. Namely: She has a specialization course in Gender Equality; she attended the RACVIAC Gender Training of the Trainers Course; the Gender, The Military and International Security course, and the course Train the Trainers: Gaming for Peace to build Soft Skills for Peacekeeping: Gender Awareness, Cultural Awareness, and Communication.


During her free time, Sofia is also engaged in Emotional Intelligence projects and gives training in Communication and Development of Soft Skills, namely via Talaus Teatro, the Theatre group she directs. Sofia is also a playwright, actress, and practitioner of martial arts and Krav Maga. She is married, has two sons and one beloved granddaughter.

Major João Reis

João Reis is a military man and researcher on the Erasmus + project “Military Gender Studies”. What motivates him to joint this project is the strong desire to work with talented people. João Reis is fascinated by science and hates talking about himself, he loves to take a good walk by the sea, a place where you probably find him when he is not working.

Major Sandrina Cunha

Major Cunha is an organizational psychologist, and is currently teaching and developing her research on the field of Leadership, at the Military Academy (Portugal).

Cunha is interested in exploring the connections between Gender Mainstreaming and Leadership, which is why she has joined the MGS Project as a researcher.


Cunha has two daughters and loves sport (running).

Second Lieutenant Andreia Alves

Andreia Alves is a Second Lieutenant (OF-1) of the Portuguese Army. With a master's degree in Military Administration, she is currently working as the chief of the financial subsection at the Regimento de Lanceiros Nº 2.


Furthermore, Alves is a researcher for the ERASMUS+ project Military Gender Studies (MGS), part of the Portuguese team work. Her interest in participating in this project stems from both personal and professional reasons. Accordingly, she has devoted her MA thesis to the topic of gender studies in a military context, entitled "The United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on gender issues and its impact on the Military Academy" (in Portuguese: “A Resolução 1325 do Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas para as questões de género e o seu impacto na Academia Militar”).


In her free time, Andreia enjoys singing, swimming and travelling.

PhD Ana Romão

Ana Romão holds a PhD in Comparative Studies from the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon (International PhD Programme - PhDCOMP), with a PhD Fellowship from the FCT. Her dissertation was entitled Weaponized Women in Contemporary Visual Culture: Representing Military Women in the ‘War on Terror’.  Her main areas of research are: Visual Culture, Gender Studies, and Military Studies.


Romão is a researcher for the ERASMUS+ project Military Gender Studies (MGS), part of the organizing Portuguese team working from Academia Military (Military Academy). Her interest in participating in this project stems from both personal and professional reasons, as she has devoted both her MA and PhD thesis to the topic of gender studies in a military context.


Aside from her academic work, Romão enjoys reading and painting.

Sergeant Diogo Silva

Diogo Silva has completed the Sergeants’ Training Course in Military Administration, and is in charge of managing project at the Center for Research, Development, and Innovation at the Military Academy (Portugal). Silva is currently a BA student in Public Administration at the Institute of Higher Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP).


For Diogo Silva, the MGS Project is a great challenge, as it is the first international project in which he participates.


In his free time, Silva likes to practice Trail Running, and read about Economics. He has walked the Way of Saint James several times.
